You’re not behind. You’re just paddling too late

Last week, I told you about my failed attempt to become a surfer in Maui.

For nearly an hour, I couldn’t catch a single wave.

I was paddling hard. Working harder than most of the people around me. And somehow getting worse results.

I also told you that my instructor gave me one piece of advice that changed everything.

I promised I’d tell you what he said.

So here it is.

The instructor watched me struggle for a while and then said:

“You’re doing what everyone does. You’re waiting until the wave is underneath you before you start paddling.”

Then he pointed out toward the water.

“You need to pick the wave before it gets to you. Start moving early. Let the momentum carry you.”

And just like that, everything changed.

Within minutes, I caught a wave.

Not because I paddled harder.

Because I started sooner.

I’ve thought about that moment a lot over the past few years because it’s exactly what I’m seeing happen with AI right now.

Most people are waiting.

Waiting until they have more time.

Waiting until they understand it better.

Waiting until a competitor starts using it.

Waiting until they absolutely have to learn it.

The problem is that by the time the wave is underneath you, you’re already playing catch-up.

That’s why I’ve become so passionate about helping business owners understand AI.

Not because I think everyone needs to become a tech expert.

Not because I think robots are taking over the world.

But because I believe the people who learn how to use these tools now will have an enormous advantage over the people who wait.

Over the past several months, I’ve been listening carefully.

I’ve heard the excitement.

I’ve heard the skepticism.

I’ve heard the overwhelm.

And I’ve heard the same question over and over again:

“How do I actually use AI in my business?”
