The Secret to Making Your Team Smile

The Secret to Making Your Team Smile

Have you ever noticed how a simple, thoughtful gesture can make someone’s entire day? Lately, I’ve been experimenting with being more intentional in my gratitude. I’ve started sending quick notes to friends, family, or colleagues that go something like this: “Hey, I was just thinking about you. Hope things are going great. No need to reply—just wanted you to know.”

What’s been amazing is the response—everything from thumbs-up emojis to heartfelt replies like, “Wow, I really needed that today.” It’s reminded me of how far small, genuine acts of kindness can go.

It also brought to mind a story from an interview I did with a client in the engineering and construction industry. She shared how her company hosted a banquet where every employee was asked to write a thank-you note to their guest—be it a spouse, partner, or parent. What no one expected was that when employees arrived, there was also a personalized thank-you card waiting for them, written by the company’s owners. Imagine the impact of 200 hand-written notes expressing sincere gratitude for the contributions each team member made.

Now, here’s a leadership challenge for you: this holiday season, take the time to handwrite a thank-you card for each member of your team. Be specific. A generic “Thanks for all you do!” doesn’t cut it. Instead, mention something unique:

  • “I love how you always find ways to lighten the mood during stressful meetings.”
  • “Your attention to detail in [specific project] made all the difference.”
  • “Clients consistently rave about your warmth and professionalism, and it inspires us all.”

The ripple effect of heartfelt gratitude will far outlast any holiday swag or gift cards.

And if you really want to take your appreciation for their efforts to the next level, consider giving your team the gift of participation in the Team Transformation Event. It’s an incredible opportunity to elevate morale, improve communication, and build a culture of trust and collaboration. Let them know how much you value their contributions by investing in their growth. Learn more and register here.

Here’s your window of opportunity: start now. One card a day between now and the holidays will make this doable. If you give this a try, I’d love to hear how it goes—and how many smiles (or happy tears) you get in return.

Let’s lead with gratitude,
