The One Thing Most Doctors Don’t Get Trained For
Nobody likes stepping on a scale.
You can suck in your stomach, think light thoughts, or even take off your socks… but that number doesn’t care. It tells you the truth whether you want to hear it or not.
I’m a lot like that scale.
After 15 years of coaching orthodontists, I’ve learned that most people don’t actually want the truth. They want someone to tell them their problems are complicated, that they’re doing their best, and that success is just around the corner if they keep doing what they’re doing.
But here’s what I’ve discovered: Most orthodontists can’t actually articulate what they want.
They can tell you everything they DON’T want:

“I don’t want to work 60-hour weeks”

“I don’t want team drama”

“I don’t want to feel overwhelmed”
But ask them what they DO want? Specifically? They get fuzzy.
Here’s a quick exercise that might surprise you:
Complete this sentence: “In 12 months, I want my practice to be…”
(Go ahead, actually write it down. I’ll wait.)
Most people write something vague like “more profitable” or “less stressful.” But successful people get specific:

“I want to work 40 hours a week maximum while maintaining current revenue”

“I want a team that handles 80% of decisions without me”

“I want to take 4 weeks vacation without checking email”
The difference? Successful people know exactly what they’re aiming for.
