News Flash: You Don’t Need More Hangers!
The new year always brings a desire for fresh starts and clean slates. For Shannon and me, this year is all about embracing a concept I learned from Jesse Itzler (yes, Sara Blakely’s husband, extreme sports enthusiast, and author of Living with a SEAL). He calls it “Starting Light.”
The idea is simple yet powerful: lighten your load—physically, mentally, and emotionally. When we clear out the unnecessary things weighing us down, we create space for what truly matters. It’s not just about organizing or tidying up; it’s about letting go of anything that no longer serves us so we can move forward with clarity and purpose.
Shannon and I decided to start with our closets.
Now, here’s the scenario: Shannon and I often find ourselves running out of hangers. The old us? We’d hop in the car, head to Costco, and buy more. But this time, instead of buying more hangers, I had a revelation: we don’t need more hangers—we need fewer clothes.
Think about it: how many of us are guilty of hanging onto that pair of pants we haven’t worn in five years or those shirts that fit a “future us”? Instead of letting these items take up space, what if we blessed someone else’s life by donating them?
This concept goes beyond closets. Jesse’s idea inspired us to declutter our phones (I deleted TikTok, Instagram, and X—YouTube survived the purge), clean out the garage (goodbye, unused washer and dryer!), and rethink the way we “organize” our stuff.
Listen, I know it’s tempting to keep piling things up, shoving them into metaphorical (or literal) messy closets like Monica’s on Friends. But true freedom comes when you stop just hiding the clutter and actually let it go. Purging the unnecessary creates space—not just physical space, but mental and emotional clarity to focus on what really matters.
So, what does this mean for us in 2025?
Whether it’s your closet, your business, or your life, take stock of what you have and ask yourself:
- Do I really need more hangers, or can I get rid of what’s just taking up space?
- Am I making room for what truly matters?
- What can I remove so I can feel lighter, more creative, and less overwhelmed?
Here’s your challenge for the weekend:
- Start with your phone. Delete unused apps.
- Move to your closet. Donate clothes you haven’t worn in years.
- Look at your business. Are you adding “hangers” when you should be subtracting instead?
You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you let go of the excess. Trust me, the mental clarity is worth it. And the next time you’re tempted to buy more hangers, remember: you probably don’t need them.
Let’s start the year lighter, together.
Proactive, Productive and Profitable,
Dino
