Is your office telling the right story about you
Is your office telling the right story about you
I once drove past a pediatric dental office on my way to Vegas. Bright colors, big sign, and a giant dolphin.
In Utah.
Landlocked Utah. No ocean. No coastline. Not even a suspiciously large puddle nearby.
Naturally, I had to stop in.
I asked the doctor about the dolphin. He told me his marketing person said kids like dolphins.
And I remember thinking, that is a very expensive way to say absolutely nothing about who you are.
Here is what I have learned after walking into practices all over the country. The offices that feel alive are the ones that reflect the person who owns them. The ones that feel a little off were designed to appeal to everyone and end up connecting with no one.
Take Dr. Darren Loew of Loew & Patel Orthodontics in New Jersey. He loves skiing. So he lined the top of his entire office with baseball caps from every ski resort he has ever visited and added large photos of the mountains. You walk in and instantly know something real about him.
And here is what happens next. Patients ask about it. No awkward small talk. No forcing conversation. The room does the work.
Dr. Bader in Arizona is a sports guy. Each treatment bay represents a different team. His undergrad, his dental school, the Arizona Cardinals, the Arizona Diamondbacks. You do not have to guess what he is into. You feel it right away.
Then there is Dr. Stefanie Dougherty of Dougherty Orthodontics in St. Louis. She is a working mom. Instead of a generic message about caring for families, she used a photo of her kids tugging at her while she was working. One image said everything. Every working mom who saw it immediately felt it. She gets it.
Here is the part most people miss. A lot of doctors are naturally introverted but spend all day acting extroverted. That takes energy. When your environment already speaks for you, you do not have to create connection from scratch every time. It is already there.
And there is a business side to this too. People buy from people they know, like, and trust. Your office is one of the fastest ways to build that before you even say hello.
So the next time someone suggests a trendy theme or a logo that tested well, pause and ask yourself one question.
Is this actually me?
If the answer is no, keep looking. You are going to spend the next 20 or 30 years in that space. It should feel like yours.
Proactive, Productive, and Profitable,
