Do you have a hidden flaw in your programming? It’s time for some tough love.
Do you have a hidden flaw in your programming? It’s time for some tough love.
Today I am going to be sharing a little tough love with you. What I am about to say may not be easy to hear. I recently came across this quote and I felt I had to share it with you:
“You can’t see your own programming.”
What does this mean? Oftentimes we think we can figure out our challenges or mindset struggles on our own. But because of our habits and lifestyle, we can’t always see a clear, complete picture. It really takes someone else to be able to point out areas that you can’t see.
We all have blind spots in our situations because we live in them. Our brain goes into an alpha state that prevents us from truly seeing. It is a sort of wakeful relaxation that is associated with increased alpha wave activity in our brain. Think of it as your personal auto pilot. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. If you have ever driven home from somewhere and as you pull into the driveway you think, “Wow- I don’t even remember driving here.”, you’ve been in the alpha state. It’s when you don’t even think about what you are doing, you just do it.
In order to shift and change, we need to switch from the alpha state to the beta state. The beta state of mind has small, faster brain waves associated with a state of mental, intellectual activity and outwardly focused concentration. This is basically a state of alertness. Unfortunately we can’t always do that on our own. It takes other people who are outside of the situation to point out places that need to improve. That is why I always use mentors and advisors in my own life to help me see what change needs to happen. Sometimes even bringing in a new team member who will make suggestions about slight changes to our processes that may make more sense will be the catalyst of something great in my business.
So why am I bringing all of this up? Well, this same principle applies to your team. It can be easy to get frustrated with our team members because we have to keep telling them the same thing over and over. Or they don’t recognize that action A leads to consequence B and if they don’t like consequence B, they need to stop doing action A. I want you to be aware that this happens because they can’t see their own programming. Sometimes we have to give them the resources and tools to have someone else point out the flaws in their programming and facilitate the change.
And listen, I’ll be the first to say that having someone help you get to that beta state or state of self awareness isn’t always easy. It’s not fun to have someone push you out of your comfort zone. It takes a strong person to be willing to grow and an even stronger person to recognize that they may not even realize where the growing needs to happen. But, I guarantee you, it is worth it! You will see a huge increase in all the relationships in your life- business, family, friends.
